“Blessings are called ‘Sacramentals’ because they prepare us to receive the grace of the sacraments and help us to grow to be more like Christ.  Blessings consist of prayer, Scripture, and sometimes a special ritual sign.” USCCB  For example, we make the sign of the cross using Holy Water when entering a Church:  That pious action and Holy Water itself, which together remind us of our Baptism, awaken us to the presence of God and disposes us to receiving God’s grace.

We bless persons for many reasons:

The Christian family is….where God’s children learn to pray as the Church and to persevere in prayer.  As a human and Christian family, some of our earliest prayers focus on the people in our lives.  Prayers for people often highlight important moments in the life of a family, school, or Church.  Prayers for people remind us that, whether in times of grief or joy, God is always with us.

We bless objects for many reasons:

  • Blessed icons or other images or objects in the household to use as a part of regular prayer
  • Tools or objects that provide an occasion to give thanks and recognize the joy and responsibility of human labor, recreation, and devotion
  • A vehicle that makes it possible to overcome distance and come together for meetings, visits, and other forms of social contact
  • Homes, boats, other vehicles that are essential to our livelihood and to protect those who use them.
