Schedule of Vigil, Funeral Mass, and Committal (Graveside Service)
Traditionally, the Vigil is held at the Funeral Home the evening before the funeral. It consists of Scripture, Psalms, Prayers, and optionally, recitation of the Holy Rosary. The Funeral Mass is held in the Church the next morning, most commonly at 10:00 a.m. and the Committal/Graveside services immediately follow. At times, families request a simple “Catholic Chapel Service,” either at the Funeral Home the night before or the day of the burial. There are many reasons for this decision.
Liturgical Preparation
The Funeral Rites of the Catholic Church are rich and varied. Therefore, the family needs to meet with the Pastor before any plans are made. The Pastor will help with choosing the readings from scripture, the prayers, and the music appropriate for the Catholic Rites. They will staff the liturgy with lectors, communion ministers, and music ministers. The family of the deceased should compensate the musicians for their time and service, with due regard for the poor. At the Funeral Mass the homily, part of the Liturgy of the Word, is not a eulogy. If a eulogy is delivered by a family member, it is most appropriate as part of the Wake after the Vigil.
Cremation
Although cremation is now permitted by the Church, it does not enjoy the same value as burial of the body. The Church prefers and urges that the body of the deceased be present for the funeral rites since the presence of the human body better expresses the values which the Church affirms in those rites. For Catholics, the cremated remains must be buried or entombed, never scattered or kept in a loved one’s home.
Hospitality
A vital aspect of our Catholic tradition in celebrating our Faith in the Resurrection is the gathering of family and friends to support one another. Families are welcome to use the Church facilities and arrange a luncheon with our funeral luncheon coordinator.
If you or a loved one is in a healthcare facility, permanently or temporarily homebound or cannot get out to Church for some other serious reason, arrangements may be made to have an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to bring Communion to you or to your loves. A short visit, prayer, and Communion will be offered. Also, call Fr. Vidal if you wish to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick or Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please contact the Parish office at 801-544-4269
“In the Church’s Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin—and sometimes even from a physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. When the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it is God’s will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit’s gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age.” USCCB The reception of this sacrament is available to any Catholic who finds themselves in a grave physical, spiritual, or mental state of illness. Arrangements should be made through the parish office for those who are homebound. If after hours, or on weekends, the person is in imminent danger of death, please leave a message. The phone is checked periodically throughout the day. If you are having surgery you may ask a priest to anoint you before the surgery. Call the office to schedule an appointment.
Please note: It is best not to wait until the very last moment to call for a priest. There are situations when no priest is available and might be several hours away from responding.

“The origin and foundation of Christian Baptism is Jesus. Before starting his public ministry, Jesus submitted himself to the baptism given by John the Baptist. The waters did not purify him; he cleansed the waters….Jesus did not need to be baptized because he was faithful to the will of his Father and free from sin. However, he wanted to show his solidarity with human beings to reconcile them to the Father. By commanding his disciples to baptize all nations, he established how people would die to sin—original and actual—and begin to live a new life with God. In Baptism, the Holy Spirit moves us to answer Christ’s call to holiness. In Baptism, we are asked to walk by the light of Christ and to trust in his wisdom. We are invited to submit our hearts to Christ with even deeper love. Adult Baptism. For adults, the Church, after the Second Vatican Council, has restored the order of the Catechumenate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). It outlines the steps for the formation of catechumens, bringing their conversion to the faith to greater maturity. It helps them respond more deeply to God’s gracious initiative in their lives and prepares them for union with the Church community. This process is meant to form them into the fullness of the Christian life and to become disciples of Jesus, their teacher.” USCCB Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Baptism is the Sacrament by which we are initiated into the life of Christ and become a member of God’s household. For adults and children age 7 or older, this process is through the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Baptismal preparation classes are held on the third Friday of each month at 5:00 pm in English and 6:00 pm in Spanish in the Choir Room. Parents wishing to have their child or children baptized should speak with Fr. Vidal and complete the preparation program stipulated by the Diocese. Parents should be registered in the Parish. Parents who present their children for Baptism are to provide assurances that the children will be raised in the Catholic faith. Godparents/Sponsors must have received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist and be at least 16 years of age. They must be practicing Catholics.
